PAF Safety Day Coordinator Spotlight: Brian Sparks

In West Virginia, one man's steadfast commitment to community safety has been a driving force for positive change. Brian Sparks has been a dedicated advocate for safety education for over two decades, bringing about positive change in his community. With over 20 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day programs completed, Brian's journey exemplifies the power of collaboration, determination, and service. 

In 2002, Brian began working with the Progressive Agriculture Foundation (PAF) by continuing the Safety Day program through the West Virginia University (WVU) Extension office in Nicholas County. This year, Brian will receive the Bernard Geschke Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes over 20 years of service with the Progressive Agriculture Foundation.

When asked about his decision to collaborate with the PAF, Brian emphasizes the power of unity: "Together, we achieve more." By partnering with PAF, Brian has been able to amplify the reach and effectiveness of Safety Day, making it a cornerstone of his community’s safety initiatives.

"I am fortunate to have incredible partners who share a common vision for our community," Brian remarks. Through strategic partnerships, Brian has seen firsthand the impact of collective action. PAF has provided invaluable support, resources, and expertise, enabling Brian and his team to expand Safety Day's reach and effectiveness.

Together, Brian and PAF have built a program that educates and inspires, fostering a culture of safety and responsibility among Nicholas County's youth. The alignment between PAF's Safety Day curriculum and WVU Extension is unmistakable. "Our focus is on youth programming," Brian affirms. 

Reflecting on memorable moments, Brian recalls the community's response to ATV safety courses following a series of tragic accidents. "ATV safety is a major concern here," he explains. Safety Day has become an indispensable resource for Nicholas County youth, providing ATV safety courses, potentially life-saving lessons, and other safety programs. Brian and his team have turned adversity into opportunity, transforming challenges into solutions and ensuring participants have the knowledge and skills they need to thrive.
